A big thank you for reading this page and considering to give the gift of scouting to your scout and others! The 59th Johnson Creek is a small scout group with the Outdoor Service Guides centered around the Sellwood/Moreland/Milwaukie areas. The goals of the program is to teach service, outdoor skills, character and leadership while having fun. Adults lead by example but often gain fun skills and the fun of being part of a community aswell.
In general the expectations for leaders are:
- Attend regular scouting meeting with their scout
- Participate in monthly planning meetings with either their section
- Answer emails
- Help plan and lead scout meetings
- Willingness to learn as you go
The best way to learn how to do this is to start and work with an experienced scout leader. We ask all leaders to become a Rover themselves, get background checked and attend a training camp called "Brownsea Training Camp" or BTC. At BTC you essentially learn the program by spending a weekend being a scout at each level. Everyone who attends has had fun and typically comes out with a deeper appreciation for scouting and what we are trying to build.
In the Pacific Northwest there have been two training events a year. Typically in early October and April. The format is typically car camping with trainees arriving on the Friday night or Saturday morning and then the program runs till mid day on Monday. Adults who attend learn about our program and attain all the requirements for being invested as a Rover. Many of these skills are the same ones they will later teach the scouts.
The next one will be:
- Sept 30th (Friday evening) through October 3rd.
